On the fourth day they emptied the cave. They closed the big door. The one remaining guard did one last pass through and exited through the pedestrian door. He closed it. Put the key in the door and turned it. He joined the rest of the people on the bus and they drove away. The parking lot was empty. The 17.8 month ordeal was over, from Conner ‘knowing’ about the virus until the Cherokee left the cave. A new ordeal was about to begin. Not one passenger on the bus looked back. Forward was where life now lay. And, though they were apprehensive, they couldn’t wait to get started.
